HUMBLE – Elgin senior Shanice Ross finished second in the girls discus at the Class 5A, Region III track and field meet Saturday to qualify for state.
Ross punched her ticket with a throw of 122 feet, 8 inches. Shadow Creek’s Morgan Shelton (124-08) won the event.
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the UIL state meet May 10-11 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The top third-place finisher among the four 5A regions also earns a wild-card entry to state.
Andrenique Roberson tried to make a run at a wild card in the girls shot put, but ended up fifth with a heave of 36 feet, 6.25 inches. She finished one spot ahead of Elgin teammate Kerrington Holiday (36-04).
Elgin also sent two boys, Tim Upton and Jordan Hood, to the regional meet. Upton and Hood competed in the high jump and shot put, respectively, but neither made it out of the preliminary stage.
