The Elgin Wildcats 8th-grade boys basketball B team took to the court last Thursday night with the anticipation of a win against their competition from neighboring town of Liberty Hill. With masked faces and families definitely more scarce than usual, the fans cheered on their teams with the confidence and excitement hoping their side would win.
The fast-paced first quarter started out with Liberty Hill claiming 18 points to Elgin’s eight. The second quarter held a more equal competitive participation, with Panthers taking 11 points and Elgin 10. Last weeks’ high scorer for the Wildcats was Cason Nalle (#21) with a total of 11 points, while Blake Thames (#22) contributed nine points and Servando Rameriz (#2) came in next with eight points. Other team members playing their part in the score were Cameron Asberry (#13) with two points, and Michael Curtis (#1) and Jack Grames (#23) both with one point each.
The Panthers’ high scorer was Tyler Delagarza (#5), accumulating 14 points, while Adam Solis (#15) gave the Panthers six more points to their score. Hayden McBeath (#1) scored five points, and Maysen Harrison (#14) and Brayden Jordan (#24) both contributed four points each. Westin Calhoun (#25) and Ezra Fillmore (#13) both shot three points. While Anthony Esters (#11) and Brock Harrington (#33) scored two points each, Thayer Vallejo added an additional one point as well.
With coaching from Liberty Hill Coach Mike Scott, the Panthers held the score throughout the game for a triumphant final win of 44-32. Although the Wildcats fought a relentless and determined game, they could not pull the needed points for the win.
Shortly after the Elgin B Team game, the Liberty Hill Panthers 8th grade boys’ A team showed their shear determination over the Elgin Wildcats for a crushing win of 51-24. With the guidance of Liberty Hill Coach John Mason, the boys played a very aggressive and well performed match against the Wildcats by scoring the first 12 points of the game in the first quarter, with Liberty Hill Panther Haegan Oncken (#34) scoring 14 total points and being the top scorer for the game.
As the competition progressed, Panther Jaxson Scott (#12) scored 13 points and Eric Richardson (#50) contributed 10 additional points for the victorious win over the Wildcats. Other Panther team members who assisted were JD Richards (#2) with seven points, Johnathan Allaire (#23) with four points and Andrew Basey (#22) with three points.
While the Wildcats and Coach Aaron Griffin were holding on with persistence of a win, they focused on scoring points against the Panthers with Jalen Owen (#3) holding the prominence of high scorer for the Wildcats with 13 points. Alongside him was Johnathan Richard (#24) scoring four points. Other Wildcats who contributed additional points were Amar Bermudez (#5) with three points, and Bralon Rodriguez (#20) and Joseph Stiggers (#50) both adding two points each to the score.
It was quite noticeable, while regardless of the loss, Coach Griffin displayed his knowledge and compassion to the Wildcats to play a game to the best of their abilities and to strive to work harder for a future win next time. Congratulations to both teams for a game well played and a team of pride and sportsmanship.
