Lady Cats track has a new coach at the helm.
Coach Hope Pawlik assumed head coaching duties for the 2019-2020 season after Coach Jenny Fajkus resigned her position.
Coach Pawlik is from Willis, Texas, where she ran track and played volleyball in high school. She attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe and played indoor and outdoor volleyball. Pawlik was the director of a beach volleyball club in Houston and relocated to Giddings to be closer to family, working for the state while coaching on the side. After having her daughter, she moved to Bastrop. She accepted the position as the behaviorist on campus and the track coach position as well.
Pawlik likes all sports, but the competitive environment of track is her favorite. “It’s a team sport, getting team points, but it’s also an individual running against time for your individual time,” she said.
There are a lot of things going on with running events and field events happening simultaneously.
“It shows you a lot of intrinsically-motivated kids ready to compete on their own and then as a team as well,” Pawlik said.
The team is made up of quite a few younger students, so Pawlik wants to establish a solid group in the freshman and sophomore classes so they will have a good run-off year coming off of this year.
Versatility is an asset Pawlik brings to Elgin. She is calm and patient, but also structured because of her background in behavioral studies. She is open to suggestions from students and colleagues alike and genuinely wants to see her students succeed.
