Greetings Elgin. My name is Matthew Hooks, and I will be taking over the sports writing duties here at the Elgin Courier. I come to you motivated and determined to produce the best sports coverage possible for the local area schools.

A little about myself and my background. I was born is St. Louis, MO and raised in Arkansas. I served both in the National Guard and U.S. Army from 1998 until I was medically retired in 2016.

I am a COVID-19 Class of 2020 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in English/Creative Writing.

In 2016, prior to leaving the military, I interned as a sportswriter for the Columbus Lions professional indoor football team in Columbus, GA. Since April 2019 I have been the Sports Editor/Writer for the Taylor Press in Taylor, TX.

My goal and mission are to get all of the student athletes in local area schools the best exposure and coverage they all so deserve, this is especially important during the current pandemic era that we now find ourselves.

For me, sports is not just the now, it is anything sports past present and future, to include feature pieces about former local area athletes that have moved on to successful endeavors. Your assistance in this will be greatly appreciated as I start this journey of covering sports for your community.

Please feel free to reach out to me with photos, story ideas, stats, or just anything the community would benefit from in regard to sports.

Not only will I make the effort to get the high schools covered, but also community sports such as summer leagues and other events for the up-and-coming future local area all-stars.

Currently, I can be contacted by email at TPsports@taylorpress.net, this may change in the future. Also feel free to stop by the paper with your sports information.

I look forward to working with the staff at the Elgin Courier and the residents of Elgin and other local coverage areas.
