For Elgin High School varsity basketball coach, John Howie, a love for the game blossomed at an early age. With his older sister being enrolled at the University of North Carolina, Howie would spend childhood summers in Chapel Hill, where he occasionally ran into Tar Heel players at Carmichael Auditorium.Early exposure to the sport sparked in Howie a passion for basketball, and a UNC Tar Heel fandom that traveled with him as his family moved out to a small town in West Texas later in his adolescent years.
