Edwin “Sammy” Oscar Lundgren, Jr., age 94, of Elgin, Texas, passed away on January 15, 2022.

Edwin was born in Elgin, Texas on December 1, 1927, to Edwin Oscar Lundgren, Sr. and Hulda Johnson Lundgren. He graduated from Elgin High School on a Friday and that following Monday, he and two of his buddies, Curtis Ray and Billy Bob Meredith enlisted in the US Navy. Edwin’s dad, along with the other boys’ parents, had to sign for them as they were all only 17 years old. They then went off to boot camp in San Diego. These times were one of the highlights of his life. Edwin served in Word War II in the Pacific from 1945-1946 where he received a Battle Star.

After leaving the US Navy, Edwin received his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. He then began attending the graduate business school at the University of Texas when he met Shirley Cook. She swept him off his feet and they were married four months later during the summer of 1950.  During their marriage, they had five children and were married for 67 years.

Edwin worked in the family business at the Elgin Cotton Oil Mill from which he retired. He was a member of the Texas Cottonseed Crusher’s Association. He was also appointed to be President of the National Cottonseed Crusher’s Association. He was a Trade Delegate and went over to China to promote cottonseed products. He also served as the official weather recorder for Elgin where he religiously recorded the weather for 50 years. He served as the President of the Board of Directors of Elgin Bank until it was bought out by Franklin Bank. Edwin was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Elgin.

He was an avid fisherman and, once all the kids were out of the house, he and Shirley traveled extensively. They loved going on cruises and visiting places all around the world. Edwin had a great sense of humor. He was a big prankster that was always up for a laugh. He always had a glass of wine ready for anyone who walked through the door.

Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life, Shirley, his children, Bradley Robert Lundgren, Nancy Lundgren Hoyt, and Gregory Cook Lundgren, and his brothers, Ralph Lundgren and Robert “Bobby” Lundgren.

He is survived by his sons, Stanley Ralph Lundgren and wife, Suzie, and Mark Alan Lundgren and wife, Darlene, his grandchildren, Christine Lundgren, Emily Hoyt Crew, Matthew Hoyt, Eric Hoyt, Ryan Lundgren, Christopher Lundgren, and Michael Lundgren, nine great grandchildren, his sisters, Laverne Owens and Joann Clayton, numerous nephews and nieces, and his Hilltop family.

The family would like to thank Edwin’s caregivers, Josie Paiz and Tina Reyna for their care during these last years.

A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Elgin Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home.
