Sheriff’s office warns of warrant scam

Posted in:

In June, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office warned citizens of a telephone scam threatening victims with arrest for fictitious outstanding warrants.

BCSO posted an announcement to their Facebook page on June 21 saying they have received several reports about a scam in which the caller claims to be a Bastrop County deputy named Keith Montgomery. The “deputy” tells the victim that they have warrants that will result in an arrest if they fail to pay a fee through gift cards with a specific dollar amount. Once the victim obtains the gift cards, the caller instructs the victim to provide the unique number on the back of the cards.

The post reminded citizens that BCSO will never contact them to pay fines or fees with gift cards, and if someone requests money via wire transfer or gift cards, it is a scam.
