May 2022 Election: Chuck Swain

What made you want to run for this position?

I believe it is your civic duty to get involved. I think my leadership experiences and volunteer work could be of use. I’m in this for Elgin.

What kind of experience - educational, professional or personal - do you bring to this position?

I retired from the US Air Force with 22 ½ years. Our family moved to Elgin over 17 years ago and have seen this city grow. We are members of Elgin VFW and American Legion posts. Was commander at VFW for around 10 years and two years with the Legion. Was a VFW District commander serving 5 counties, 20 post with membership of 4500. Also a member of Lucky Old Scoundrels motorcycle club which promotes community support, we adopt several families at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing Elgin?

With the population boom, traffic is going to continue to be a concern. We need to attract business suited for Elgin. With population growth, housing values will rise. Let’s lock down property taxes for the elderly.

How do you expect Elgin to adapt as Bastrop County’s population grows? Where do you see the city in five years?

I see Elgin’s population at 30- to 50-thousand in five years. With this growth, we need more family activities. The parks revitalization plan is an excellent start.

What is one issue you want to fix or improve if you take office?

I want to make sure our infrastructure is good. The new homes coming in will be addressed. What about the older neighborhoods? No more snowmageddens.

Why should the voters choose you? What sets you apart from your opponent?

I expect all the candidates are good people, why would you want this job. I am an experienced leader. I will bring new ideas to the table. I listen calmly, discuss, and act.

Any other information you would like to share with voters?

My wife, Robin, and I love Elgin. We moved here from San Antonio for the small town atmosphere. We are both Air Force veterans. Our son is currently serving in the Air Force. And has she put up with me for 39 years.
