Elgin football player who broke down barriers inducted into hall of fame

Shortly before the schools in Elgin began to desegregate, a stellar athlete who graduated from Elgin’s all-black Booker T. Washington High School took to the field in a televised game to make history on September 10, 1966. That day, John Hill Westbrook, a sophomore halfback playing for the Baylor Bears against Syracuse, became the first African-American student to play football in the Southwest Conference.
