The Elgin City Council appointed two new interim council members—Thomas Ibis and Alvis Prince—to represent Ward 3 until May at their most recent council meeting on Tuesday, January 5.
Last year, former Ward 3 council member Daniel Lopez did not run for re-election, and no one applied to be a candidate in the election for that position. Then, former Ward 3 council member Brad Jones resigned from the council in October to focus more on his family.
In late November, the City of Elgin opened applications to fill the two vacant seats for Ward 3 on the council until the May 2021 election. The appointees may choose to run in the May election to keep the position, but are not required to do so.
Last Tuesday, the council went into executive session for a little under an hour to discuss the appointments to Ward 3 and the appointments and reappointments of members to various city commissions, boards and committees.
When they came back into open session, the council voted unanimously to appoint Thomas Ibis and Alvis Prince as interim council members for Ward 3.
Election Day for local elections will be Saturday, May 1. Early voting will take place from Monday, April 19 through Tuesday, April 27.
