Rebuilding starts for burned Smithville chamber office

Nearly two years after a fire burned down the original, the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new office in downtown Smithville on Monday, December 7. The original building, which housed the railroad museum, Chamber office and the visitors center at the James H. Long Railroad Historical Park, was destroyed by a fire on March 24, 2019. In October 2019, Alfred Nealy was indicted for the arson of the building. The chamber is now selling sponsored pavers for the walkway leading to the entrance of the new building.
