State updates COVID-19 fatality count

Bastrop County’s COVID-19 dashboard now shows a total of 17 deaths due to COVID-19 after the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) changed its method of reporting fatalities. According to a press release from DSHS on July 27, the new method of counting COVID-19 deaths identifies cases through the cause of death listed on death certificates. A fatality is counted as due to COVID-19 when the medical certifier—usually a doctor with direct knowledge of the patient—determines that COVID-19 directly caused their patient’s death, according to the DSHS press release.
