Fifth-grade students from all three of Elgin ISD’s elementary campuses visited the high school to explore job opportunities that involve vehicles during the annual Careers on Wheels event. The students learned many of these careers involve other expertise, such as health sciences for the emergency medical services provided by Acadian; engineering and science with Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative; construction, estimating and engineering with the City of Elgin and their heavy equipment; fire rescue with the Elgin Fire Department; and law enforcement with the Elgin Police Department and the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. Many fifth-grade students are about to enter middle school and choose a program of study to help launch their career, and Careers on Wheels is a day to get students thinking about future career possibilities, according to Bruce Peckover, Elgin High School director of college, career and military readiness.
