Originating in downtown Elgin, TX in 1882, Southside Market & Barbeque is the oldest BBQ joint in Texas, now owned and operated by third-generation Pitmaster Bryan Bracewell and his wife Rachel. Over the past 137 years, this historic restaurant has grown from a one-man butcher shop to its current status as a must-visit destination for those seeking authentic sausage and meats, smoked low and slow over real Texas post oak wood in the traditional Central Texas style. Their Original Beef Sausage has long been considered their signature item – made fresh, in-house daily for a level of quality, taste and enjoyment you can’t find anywhere else. No shortcuts, no gimmicks. Just top quality meats, a simple dry rub, real wood, and time.
“Rachel and I are so pleased to make this announcement. We are sincerely thankful for our wonderful team of great folks who work hard daily to delivery top quality Central Texas BBQ and great customer service with Texas friendly hospitality. We look forward to meeting our new neighbors in Austin this fall,” said Bryan Bracewell, Owner of Southside Market & Barbeque.
Southside Market first began in 1882 with founder William J. Moon selling meats in Elgin from a horse-drawn wagon. Due to a lack of refrigeration in those days, Mr. Moon would take whatever was left over at the end of the day and make smoked sausage and barbeque. Four years later, he opened his first storefront on what was then known as South Street, and the legend began. Bracewell’s grandparents, Ernest, Sr. and Adrene, bought the business in 1968. Since then, the Bracewell family has spent the last 50 years carrying on the rich tradition of exceptional sausage and barbeque following the same authentic Central Texas smoking methods, keeping Southside center of the plate for 137 years.
Southside Market is also working on another location in Hutto which is set to open in the second quarter of 2020.
