Vida Gonzalez unwraps her All-Star award.

Vida Gonzalez, an Elgin High School varsity cheerleader and a consistent A-student, has exceeded every expectation of Elgin High School lead reading teacher Chenda Duong.

Gonzalez earned a Hardest Worker award for Reading 1 in the 2021 fall semester and has completed all 25 segments of her READ 180 student application while other students were still working on their sixth segment. Every READ 180 segment contains six zones of learning—explore, reading, language, fluency, writing and success—and takes a lot of effort for students to complete. She has also excelled in writing original vignettes about herself based on The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.

Because of her hard work, Duong has awarded Gonzalez the All-Star award for Reading 1 for 2021-22.

“As her teacher, I am unbelievably proud of her commitment to excellence and hard work regarding her reading and everything else she tackles,” Duong said. “In my 10 years of teaching, she has been one of the hardest working students that I have had the pleasure of teaching.”
