On Friday, May 31, Elgin ISD held an end of the year breakfast and awards ceremony for its staff.
The ceremony started by honoring various staff with pins indicating their length of time working at Elgin ISD. A total of 42 staff were recognized for being with Elgin ISD for five years, 17 staff were recognized for being with Elgin ISD for ten years, eight staff were recognized for being with Elgin ISD for 15 years, ten staff were recognized for being with Elgin ISD for 20 years, two staff were recognized for being with Elgin ISD for 25 years, and Carol Havard was recognized for being with Elgin ISD for 30 years.
One staff member from each department of Elgin ISD was recognized for outstanding work in their department. The staff members recognized were Maria Chavarria (child nutrition), Debra Turnip-seed (child development center), Rodney Milligan (custodial), Francisco Arredondo Jr. (grounds), Juan Escobar Jr. (maintenance) and Brookshire Scroggins (transportation).
Each campus within Elgin ISD all recognized members of their staff based on three categories: Substitute of the Year, Paraprofessional of the Year and Teacher of Promise.
The Teacher of the Year for every campus of Elgin ISD was also honored and were Megan Wehrle (Elgin Elementary School), Jeanette Courtney (Booker T. Washington Elementary School), Jennifer Grames (Neidig Elementary School), Yenifer Ibarra (Elgin Middle School) and Adam Adams (Elgin High School).
Wayne Skubiata of the Elgin Masonic Lodge was present to give six Mari-beau B. Lamar Awards to selected teachers across Elgin ISD.
Superintendent Jodi Duron also took time to thank and recognize the child nutrition department at Elgin High School for their outstanding work in making sure that the students of the campus are fed, happy and positively influenced every day at lunch.
Donna Noonan, a pre-kindergarten teacher from Elgin Elementary School, was recognized with standing ovation for having taught for 50 years.
The ceremony was ended by the recognition of seven retiring staff from Elgin ISD: Shirley James, Betty Mayberry and Jose Torres (mainenance); Margarita Salazar and Amy Smith (Booker T. Washington Elementary School); and Jackie Bowman and Sylvia Watson (Elgin High School).
