Downtown barbecue raises funds for Broderick, Simmons families

The Elgin community worked together to remember two Elgin students and support their families on Sunday with a barbecue fundraiser. The barbecue benefit, organized by Phillip Ontiveros, was to help with any costs to the families of Alyssa Broderick, Amanda Broderick and Willie Simmons III, who were killed on April 18. The parking lot next to Prosperity Bank on Elgin’s Main Street was filled with activity as volunteers cooked, plated, sold and served the food.
