Join us for our annual free live-music series, Music in the Park! Every Friday in April, the Friends of Elgin Parks will host a different band in Veterans’ Memorial Park. The E-Flat Porch Band, a Texas-based acoustic folk and blues band, will perform on April 12 at 7 p.m.

BASTROP COUNTY CANDIDATE FORUM

The Bastrop County Democratic Party’s April community meeting will feature a forum of candidates running for city councils and school boards in Bastrop, Smithville and Elgin on May 4. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 at the First National Bank in Smithville, 312 Main Street.

FREE FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT AT THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH

The First Christian Church, 101 Robin Street in Elgin, will host a Family Movie Night each Friday with episodes from “The Bible – The Mini-Series.” The event is free, and all are invited. No reservations necessary. The seventh episode of “The Bible” is titled “Mission” and will be shown at 7 p.m. on April 12. If you have questions, call Ronnie Gregory at 512-661-8866.

ELGIN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT BBQ COOK-OFF

The Elgin Fire Department will host their 31st annual Elgin Volunteer Fire Department BBQ Cook-Off on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13. The cook-off will be at Elgin Memorial Park and is free for the public to attend. Judges are still needed for the event. Enjoy guided walking tours with Debbie Cartwright to see the locations throughout downtown Elgin during Local Lore, a history adventure celebrating the heritage of Elgin through hands-on activities, live music, walking tours and more. This free event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elgin Depot Museum, 14 Depot Street, includes games of the past and an architectural scavenger hunt. PEARLS OF YOUTH ART SHOW

The Pearls of Youth Art Show will feature more than 200 pieces of artwork by students from Elgin, McDade, and Coupland ISDs on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 14, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Clever Tiger, located at 32 N. Main Street in Elgin. The Elgin Arts Association will award its annual scholarships to graduating seniors during a reception at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

SMITHVILLE EMPTY BOWL PROJECT

The 8th Annual Smithville Empty Bowl Project is just around the corner on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 400 Olive Street. ELGIN COMMUNITY CHOIR PRESENTS PORTRAITS IN GRACE

For Palm Sunday on the evening of April 14, the Elgin Community Choir will perform Portraits in Grace: A Cantata for Holy Week by Joseph M. Martin. The cantata will take place in the auditorium of First Baptist Church of Elgin, 205 West 2nd Street. This is a free performance open to the public.

The Elgin Extension Club (EEEC) will meet Wednesday, April 17, at 1:30 at the First National Bank Community Room, 1312 U.S. Highway 290. Guest speaker will be Hillary Long, a Bastrop County Extension Agent. Hostess will be Linda Bethke. Theme will be Hat Day!
