Bastrop County boys and girls varsity track and field teams were in action this past week as Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School, Smithville High School and McDade High School competed in area meets. Numerous standout athletes were able to qualify for their upcoming regional meets by placing fourth or higher in their respective events.

State agencies and regulators were heavily criticized at a Texas legislative hearing for failing to communicate during the deadly Panhandle wildfires, the Texas Tribune reported. The three-day hearing, held in Pampa, investigated the Smokehouse Creek fire and others that burned more than a million acres, destroyed hundreds of homes, killed up to 10,000 cattle and resulted in two deaths.

Nancy Fay Meredith, age 77, of Dale, passed away April 4, 2024.
John Arthur Ashbaugh, Jr., 74, of Bastrop, passed away early Thursday morning, April 11, 2024.
Shirley Ann Wilson Eades, known by many as Shirley, but fondly called “Ann” by her parents and siblings, “Wife” by her husband Leroy, “Mom” by her children and “Granny” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, peacefully departed her earthly journey Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Before embracing her eternal peace, she had one last moment to hear her beloved husband Leroy say, “I love you. I have loved you all my life.” Shirley was born Jan. 18, 1941, to William Thomas and Della Eades in Lexington, Kentucky, Shirley was one of nine siblings. She radiated joy as a cheerleader at Athens High School before intertwining her destiny with Leroy during her senior year. Their love story blossomed into a marriage June 17, 1959, later graced by the birth of their four children, Jeffrey, Tracey, Patrick and Leroy Jr.
