The Wildcats soccer team is ready to brush off the disappointment of last season and reestablish Elgin soccer as a force to be reckoned with.

“Their attitude is a lot different this year,” said head coach Daryl Faulks. “Their mentality is a lot different. They are tired of losing.”

The Wildcats have been going hard at practice since November, and will get their first action of the season this weekend at the Hays Rebel Cup tournament, which they won last year.

Elgin will play Corpus Christi King Thursday, then Bowie and Austin Reagan on Friday.

“It’s a tough bracket. I guess that’s what happens when you win this tournament,” Faulks said.

“They put you in the tough bracket.”

From there, the Wildcats go straight into district play at Cedar Creek next Tuesday.

“It’s going to be blowing and going early on,” Faulks said.

“If we can stand the test early on, I don’t see why we shouldn’t make the playoffs. It’s up to them.”

Faulks said he has a 20-man roster loaded with talented athletes and hard workers.

“Talent is there. They’ve worked extremely hard in the weight room. This group is more talented than the team I had my first year here, and they made it to the regional quarterfinals,” Faulks said.

With no glaring weaknesses, the Wildcats have been working on bolstering their defensive skills, as the Wildcats will have a new goalkeeper this season.

“We’ve been working a lot of things, working on defending, trying to get better at that. I think with our goalkeeper situation, we’re going to have to be better at defending,” Faulks said. “There’s not one player on this field I would hesitate to put into a game.”

Putting last season’s disappointing finish behind them, the Wildcats are excited to see how far they can go this year.

“We really don’t have a lot of seniors out here,” said junior Daniel Jaramillo.

“We have a couple of weaknesses, but not a lot to say we shouldn’t make a good playoff run or anything. There should be no excuses of not making the playoffs this year.”

“We’re just practicing really hard each day. We’re going to try to not be so selfish on the field and hopefully everything just comes out pretty good,” added junior Kevin Vidales.

The most important difference in the team this year is the attitude, which has led to better practices.

“There’s a lot more dedication to this. We’re looking a lot hungrier for a win,” Jaramillo said.

With a large roster this year, there will be several players sitting on the bench during games, but that hasn’t diminished the work ethic.

“As a senior, there’s a lot of guys who are going to be on the bench, but they are competing for a spot to start and that’s a good thing, said Saul Hernandez.

“They all want to play and if they keep on playing the way they do in practice, they’ll probably get some time.”

The Wildcats face a tough district slate, but believe they are better prepared to take on that challenge each game.

“Last year we played almost selfish, this year we’re coming together as a group and working harder and harder every day,” said Vidales.

“A lot of teamwork is going to help us win in this district.”

The key for the Wildcats is going to be to keep the pressure of expectations at bay.

I think the key thing is to make it fun again,” said Hernandez.

“As much as we all want to win, if you put the pressure on yourself, and I’ve experienced this myself, you’re just going to make mistakes, but if you look at it for fun, you’re going to get the job done.”

The Wildcats’ first home match of the season will be Jan. 16 against Georgetown. Varsity matches start at 7:15 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
