The Lady Wildcats are showing improvements in each game, but still looking to piece it all together to wrap up a big win after dropping two games last week to district frontrunners Cedar Park and Rouse.

Hosting Cedar Park at home Friday night, Elgin played a close first half against the Lady Timberwolves, keeping pace until the two-minute mark of the first quarter, but only giving Cedar Park a 3-point lead.

The Lady Timberwolves tried to get some separation from the Lady Cats on the scoreboard, but Elgin’s defense kept Cedar Park within 9 points at the break.

“They played great, especially that first quarter,” said head coach Madison Koehler.

“Going into the half 21-30, it was great defense. They executed our game plan. That was awesome. We talked about it at halftime that (Cedar Park) is going to come out of the half fired up because that’s not what it’s supposed to be. We did what we were supposed to do in that first half and then we just came out flat in the second half.”

Elgin’s offense stalled in the second half, allowing Cedar Park to build on their lead.

“We just weren’t ready to go, especially offensively,” Koehler said.

“You can’t score 17 points over the last three quarters and beat a team like Cedar Park. They are a very good team and that’s why the first half felt awesome, they came out and did what they were supposed to. That was awesome, but we’ve got to do a better job in the second half, coming out ready to go.”

Koehler said the Lady Cats had Rouse within 10 points late in the game last Tuesday, but couldn’t hang on for the final 5 minutes.

“We’ve got to start finishing those games,” she said.

The season isn’t over yet, and now is the time to make a push for that fourth playoff spot.

“Our plan is to make playoffs and that is still 100 percent possible,” Koehler said.

“That dream is alive and well and that’s what we’re going to focus on. One game at a time. We’ve got to be ready to go.”
