Elgin officials have received word that a Walmart store will soon be built in the city. The store will be 150,000 square feet and will create over 300 jobs. A groundbreaking will be held in the summer of 2012 and the store should open in early 2013. Read the next issue of the Elgin Courier for more details.

Dont' be so ready for those taxes - WalMart does not like to pay property taxes. So for a town to get a WalMart, usually all taxes have to be waived for several years. WalMart will continue to make money, but won't pay property taxes. Check before you spend that income! The taxes we folks pay may stay here, but that does not mean that WalMart will help us out any, other than not having to drive to taylor or bastrop to shop at one. If they do, the rate will be so low, it won't be a drop in the bucket.

That's wonderful news for Elgin for many reasons. The property taxes will help fund our city and school budgets. People from the surrounding rural areas, Coupland, McDade, and Paige will shop there and contribute local sales tax dollars for the City of Elgin. I also understand a number of jobs will be created for our local citizens which will help during these hard economic times. Maybe this will open the doors for other companies to invest in Elgin's future.
