Elgin Board of Trustees voted to extend Superintendent Jodi Duron’s contract another year during a regular meeting on Jan. 22.

With the extension, the board also awarded a “pay increase percentage comparable to district staff.”

In other personnel matters, the board voted to

submit a written complaint against former Elgin High School English teacher Dorothy Hanshaw for abandonment of employment contract. The complaint will go to the State Board of Educator Certification, who will decide if a one-year suspension is warranted.

“This is an option we chose to exercise because we take this so seriously,” said Assistant Superintendent Al Rodriguez.

Budget calendar approved

In other action items, the board approved the budget calendar for the 2018-19 school year. The calendar sets upcoming budget workshops for the board in the coming months and what each month’s workshop will cover.

Budget workshops will be held prior to each regular board meeting from February through June at 6 p.m. at the administration building.

Budget amendment

Under the consent agenda, the board pulled a budget amendment out to discuss and vote on separately.

The budget amendment was to pull an addition $1 million from the General Fund Balance into a separate fund dedicated for facilities projects.

The amendment was unanimously approved by the board.

Election set

An election for school board seats has been set for Saturday, May 5.

Spots up for election this year are Districts 3 and 6, spots currently held by Beth Walterscheidt and Pete Bega. The deadline to return an application for a place on the ballot is Friday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m.

Board members recognized

January is school board recognition month, so Elgin’s board of trustees were honored during the meeting. Each school in the district contributed something to a basket of gifts for each member, along with a custom plaque.

“I am truly lucky to work with such a supportive board and I thank you for all of your time,” Dr. Duron told the trustees.
