Elgin AD Jim Garfield accepts assistant athletic director position with Lubbock ISD

Elgin athletic director and head football coach announced that he had accepted a position as assistant athletic director with Lubbock ISD.

City, Frontier Bank enter partnership to renovate courts at Memorial Park

Frontier Bank stepped up with $15,000 to partner with the city for a renovation of the courts at Memorial Park. The whole project cost $37,000 with the city’s share coming from available funds from a certificate of obligation the previous year.

Anderson named new AD, head football coach

Elgin ISD board of trustees approved the hiring of Jens Anderson as new athletic director and head football coach during a special meeting. Anderson came to Elgin from George Ranch High School near Katy, where he was the offensive coordinator. 

Storm wreaks havoc, tornado not confirmed 

A storm packing winds of up to 80 miles per hour roared through Bastrop County, uprooting trees, snapping utility poles, tearing off roofing materials and sending residents into the safest areas of their homes.

Wildcat, Lady Cat lifters qualify for state 

Wildcat lifter Isaac Johnson qualified for the boys state powerlifting meet, while Lady Cats Lexi Villalobos, America Osorio, Salma Ramirez and Jogeania Wilford qualified for the girls state powerlifting meet.

Elgin Police Chief Chris Bratton announces retirement 

Elgin Police Chief Chris Bratton announced he will retire at the end of 2017 officials announced during city council meeting. Bratton spent 45 years in law enforcement, and almost a decade in Elgin.

Construction begins for Rec Center 

City leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new rec center, located at the corner of Main Street and Highway 95 North. The 10-month project is nearing completion and should be open by the spring.

Lady Cats claim bi-district title with sweep 

The Lady Cats claimed the bidistrict title after earning a share of the district 19-5A title with a sweep of Magolia.

Purple Diamonds headed to Nationals 

Director Ashley Sengsouvanh and Assistant Director Lauren Connors surprised the Purple Diamonds Dance Team with the news that they had received an invitation to Nationals in Hawaii during Spring Break 2018. The dance team is currently fundraising and practicing for their trip later this spring.

Lopez appointed to vacant city council seat

Daniel Lopez was appointed to fill a vacant Ward 3 seat on city council. The seat was vacated by Craig Fromme, who moved out away from Elgin in May. Lopez filled the seat until a special election was held, in which he won the right to retain the seat.

Miss Western Days 2017 crowned 

Elgin High School junior Salma Ramirez was crowned as the Miss Western Days Queen during the pageant, which kicked off the weekend festival. Brynna Scott was named Tiny Tot Queen. Queen’s Court includes Andrenique Roberson, Caitlyn Lopez, Jayme Johns, Leah Anderson and Miss Congeniality Alyssa Brandt.

Harvey hits Elgin 

Hurricane Harvey hit Rockport as a Category 4 storm, but much of the state was doused by the rain that came inland, including Elgin, which saw up to 14 inches of rainfall in some places.

Wright named publisher 

Kevin Wright takes over as publisher of the Courier. Wright joined the Courier staff from the Gonzales Inquirer.

Local diamond shines 

Dorothy’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts was named a finalist for the Best Downtown Business for the Texas Downtown Association President’s Awards. 

Dorothy’s is located on Depot Street and is owned by Dorothy McCarther. 

Elgin Economic Development Corporation was also named a finalist for Best Downtown Partner.

Homecoming Royalty crowned

Students at Elgin High School voted Esme Morales as Homecoming Queen and Jesse Rodriguez as Homecoming King. The two were crowned before Elgin’s homecoming game against Hutto on Oct. 6. 

Elgin holds Empty Bowl Project fundraiser 

Elgin hosted its own Empty Bowl Project fundraiser Oct. 14. Tickets for handmade bowls were sold, allowing the public the opportunity to sample several local soups made by local restaurants. Funds from ticket sales went to food pantries in Elgin.

Jette named managing editor 

Sports and Education Editor Lauren Jette was named Managing Editor of the Courier. Jette has covered schools, sports and county news for the Courier since June 2016.

Elgin EDC wins Best Partner Award

Elgin EDC won the Best Partner Award from Texas Downtown Association during a banquet in McKinney. The award recognizes the outstanding work in economic development and downtown revitalization in partnership with local groups. Elgin’s Economic Development Director is Owen Rock. Members of the EDC Board include President Jeff Carter, Vice President Bryan Bracewell, Secretary S.H. McShan, Cody Mauck, Molly Alexander, Jessica Bega and Sue Brasher.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland 

Snow, yes snow, blanketed Elgin, causing Elgin ISD to cancel school for a day due to safety concerns. Based on the turnout of reader-submitted photos, most of Elgin used that day to get out and enjoy the snowfall before it all melted.

Seton is coming 

Mayor Chris Cannon and city council members announced on Dec. 13 that the City of Elgin has partnered with Seton Family of Hospitals to bring an urgent care clinic to the city in the next year. The clinic will be built south of Highway 290, just west of Walmart.
