The Elgin Ministerial Alliance held its Annual Community Thanksgiving service at New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday, Nov. 19. The beautiful white church with its towering steeple provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere on an otherwise chilly night.

The Annual Community Thanksgiving service is an ecumenical gathering of several different denominations from the Elgin area. The different churches bring their choirs, their ministers and their people coming together to worship as one sharing hymns and fellowship.

After the service, everyone gathered together for a wide array of homemade treats served in New Sweden’s fellowship hall.

Churches represented included New Sweden ELCA, First Baptist Church of Elgin, St Peters ELCA, First United Methodist Church, Greater Mount Vernon Zion AME Church and Elgin’s First Presbyterian Church.

Also listed in the program, but unable to attend was The AME Church.

The current Elgin Ministerial Alliance has three areas of service: the Annual Thanksgiving Service, the Community Good Friday Service and to work with the needy on an ongoing basis.

Offerings from the two annual services goes to help the needy with gasoline, food, utilities, rent and special needs.

Each month the EMA helps those by providing indirect financial support primarily for utility bills, such as electric, water and natural gas. Throughout the year, local churches and individuals give donations to support the efforts of the EMA to care for "the least of these," as Jesus said to do.
